Summary
In the professional data management community, there is currently no clear convergence on a shared definition of what a data product is. Often, existing definitions are very generic and not usable in practice.
In this chapter, we attempted to provide a clear and truly actionable definition of a data product. Specifically, we introduced pure data products to identify those data products that, unlike analytical applications, are solely aimed at facilitating the reuse and composability of data assets strategically for the organization. Pure data products serve as units of modularization in the data architecture, allowing the potential value of managed data to increase by making it available for the implementation of multiple use cases.
