Deviating from the mainstream of DevOps benefits
In this book, our ambition is to take a rather sophisticated approach to DevOps, and this is also applied to benefit measurement and realization. Hence, where applicable and sensible, we present creative and innovative approaches compared to the mainstream ones that you will have observed in the industry. One deviation we will pursue in this chapter is to avoid labeling the overarching outcomes of benefit realization as key performance indicators (KPIs). This is because the word indicator, being sufficiently self-descriptive, only indicates and might not necessarily tell the truth of a situation. We are instead going to call them key performance targets (KPTs), meaning targets that not only indicate, but can also provide reasonable assurance.
