Pitch shifting in real time with plugins
Pitch shifting as a musical practice has divided musicians and listeners alike when used as pitch correction. The use of Auto-Tune and other pitch correction plugins can be considered at times as both a creative tool and a crutch. This kind of pitch correction software does not come with Pro Tools. While the pitch-shifting tools that do come with it are more limiting, they are, at heart, designed to be used in broader terms and can be more functional. We’ll first explore changing the pitch of a track in real time with a plugin.
Getting ready
For this recipe, you will need a Pro Tools session with a mono audio track. The track will need an audio clip placed in it.
Make sure in your Pro Tools session that the Inserts column is shown in the Edit Window. You can do this by going to the menu bar and selecting View | Edit Window Views and making sure the appropriate items are checked or by using the Edit Window View selector drop-down...
