Summary

In this chapter, we took a journey through the evolution of Snort. It gave you a high-level idea of how features were added and modified as the years went by. It gave a glimpse of how Snort 1.0, which started off with a small goal, became Snort 2.9, one of the best IDS/IPS in the field currently. We have not listed each and every feature that was part of Snort releases and have combined the features of dotted releases together with the goal of simplifying the journey. In the next chapter, we will investigate and learn the details of Snort 3.
