Summary
In this chapter, we explored how to create a comprehensive information architecture that builds upon managed data assets to maximize their potential value.
We initially examined the different layers of an information architecture, analyzing how data transforms into information through the addition of metadata, and how information, organized into interrelated concepts, evolves into an explicit model of knowledge.
We then delved into how to collect, structure, and manage business knowledge through an enterprise ontology. Specifically, we examined in detail the structure of the domain ontology, which, unlike the subdomain ontologies that extend it, is common and shared across the whole organization. Its purpose is to prevent the creation of disconnected knowledge silos and to lay the foundation to guarantee the semantic interoperability of data products developed.
