ICS cybersecurity incidents and lessons learned
More than 500 known ICS cyber incidents have occurred worldwide to date (at the time of writing). Most of these were unintentional, but some were malicious attacks.
Their impact ranges from trivial to major outages regarding equipment damage and the total loss of production:
- Colonial Pipeline: In May 2021, the Colonial Pipeline Company was the victim of a successful ransomware attack that caused a system-wide shutdown. The closure and diminished oil transport capabilities had a severe impact on society because the Colonial Pipeline provides a substantial portion of the gasoline consumption on the East Coast of the United States. - Norsk Hydro: In March 2019, the Norwegian global supplier of aluminum, Norse Hydro, experienced a significant security incident that negatively impacted...
