Starting with the box
The first part of this project is to design the outermost part of the storage box. To do this successfully, we must first decide what our storage box will hold. For example, are you planning to hold pencils or tools? Perhaps makeup or jewelry? Or maybe use this box to hold bolts and fasteners for your workshop? This last option is what I have chosen to do.
After you’ve decided what you want your box to store, take some rough measurements to use in your design and jot them down on a Post-it or in a simple sketch to plan your project. We first looked at how to take measurements and plan projects effectively in Chapter 2, and this is a key step to finding greater success. A pencil case wouldn’t perform very well if a pencil couldn’t fit in it, after all! It’s also important that you keep your production resources in mind, too. For example, a 3D printer with a 150 mm print bed wouldn’t be able to make a box that is 200 mm in length...
