Extending Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps with Power Platform

Dynamics 365 F&O and Low-Code Development

System customization in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps has been a developer job since its early days as Axapta. If you needed to change or create new processes for the ERP, you needed a developer. Now, thanks to Power Platform, we can accomplish some of these things using a low-code approach that can speed up development and also enhance the overall maintainability of F&O. The goal of this chapter is to provide an understanding of Power Platform and how it can help you, learning about Power Apps or Power Automate, and other low-code elements in Power Platform, allowing you to gain insights of this new technology paradigm.

We will explore the following in this chapter:

  • Benefits of low-code and no-code
  • The foundation of Power Platform – Dataverse
  • Components of Power Platform

Benefits of low-code and no-code

If you’ve been working with Axapta, Dynamics AX, or the latest and current iteration of the product, Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, you are already familiar with how changing the default behavior of the system when adding new functionality is done. It will probably involve a developer making changes or creating new objects.

And, if you know how the current development and deployment workflow is done, you must be aware that it’s a time-consuming process. You need to have developers available, they must make changes or create a new feature, and once it’s tested, you need to promote the changes to a sandbox environment and, finally, to your production environment. Deploying to production will require scheduling downtime, which can be inconvenient and must even be planned with enough time depending on your, or your customer’s, business.

What can we do to minimize production downtime?

In an ideal world, the answer...

The foundation of Power Platform – Dataverse

I’ve already mentioned Dataverse a few times, and now we’re going to learn more about it. First of all, regardless of what we may think upon seeing its name, Dataverse is not a database, which is a common misconception.

Dataverse originated from the Dynamics CRM product as the XRM platform. In 2018 with the release of Power Apps, its name was changed to Common Data Service (CDS), and after some more name changes, it became the Dataverse we know today.

If not a database… what is a Dataverse?

Dataverse uses relational databases such as Azure SQL to store structured data, but it also uses unstructured databases such as Cosmos DB for logs, and it also has file storage.

Data and access are secured thanks to security roles to control access to environments, and of course, you can manage users and user groups in your Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) tenant for authentication. It also has audit capabilities...

Components of Power Platform

We’ve already learned about Dataverse, the platform on which Power Platform is built, and now we’ll delve into its different components.

Power Apps

Power Apps is probably the most known of Power Platform’s products. It is a low-code platform used to create custom applications that can be run on a phone or a tablet thanks to the Power Apps app (see Figure 1.4), or a computer using a browser:

Figure 1.4 – iOS Power Apps player

Figure 1.4 – iOS Power Apps player

Thanks to the Power Apps editor we can quickly, and without any programming knowledge, create a canvas app. Thanks to its intuitive UI (see Figure 1.5), you can drag and drop the controls you need to the app and customize its design to fit your requirements:

Figure 1.5 – Power Apps editor

Figure 1.5 – Power Apps editor

You can see this editor is a bit similar to what we have in Visual Studio for F&O. On the left, you can find a toolbox with the different controls...

Summary

In this chapter, we learned what low-code and no-code tools are. Then, we dived into Microsoft’s own low-code platform – Power Platform – and we looked into how it has introduced new ways of speeding development and enhancing maintainability in F&O.

We had an overview of Microsoft Dataverse, the platform on which Power Platform is built, and where it comes from. We also looked at the convergence plan, which will bring Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Apps and Power Platform closer together, improving the integration experience and creating a more consistent user experience.

Finally, we learned a bit about the different tools in Power Platform: Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and AI Builder, which can be used alongside Dynamics 365 F&O without replacing X++ development.

In the next chapter, we will look into Dual-Write and F&O Virtual tables. One of the primary functions of these tools is to get our Finance and Operations data...

Questions

Here are some questions to test your understanding of the chapter. The answers to the questions are given at the end.

I’ve been working with F&O since the first SaaS version, and with Power Platform since 2019. I view primarily through a user-focused lens, and I’d definitely recommend this book to both functional and technical users interested in extending the functionality of D365 F&O.The book starts with a solid introduction to all components, ensuring freshers are brought up to speed, whilst aligning understanding for the more experienced among us.Part 1 concludes with a chapter covering deployment and configuration. It does so in sufficient detail to make it easy to follow, with relevant screenshots, and important considerations clearly highlighted out in callout boxes. Later on, Part 4 does a great job of building on this area, exploring the necessary elements of Applicated Lifecycle Management, i.e. keeping the lights on!Some users may be tempted to skip past these sections for the “good stuff” in Part 2, but it’s important background knowledge to understand or consolidate. Even if you’re not involved in these aspects of deployment, it will always help if, for example, you need to signpost system administrators to fix underlying configuration. As alluded to, Parts 2 and 3 are where the exciting bits happen, especially for those of us that really enjoy fixing our customer’s challenges – seeing the smiles on their faces when (i) you tell them that you can fix a problem they have, and (ii) when they see that fix working for real!Adrià gives us some great practical examples, all detailed step-by-step, and covering use cases such as augmenting workflow approvals; embedding Power Apps; and applying custom AI models. There is lots of food for thought, and the selected examples offer a great baseline for solving other problems in equally creative ways.--Generally, the content is well broken down, with plentiful screenshots, code boxes, lists, and callouts. The author avoids extensive prose and maintains an approach throughout that us easily digestible to the modern reader. There are a couple of proofreading errors – I spotted maybe one every 15 pages or so – but I do have a keen eye for that sort of thing. The important thing is that this does not detract from the content itself. The test your knowledge sections struck the right balance between consolidating knowledge and making you feel like you haven’t been listening. The risk with anything MS-related in print is their penchant for frequent name changes. Case in point, Virtual Agents has already been renamed Copilot Studio since publication. Hopefully there aren’t too many such changes to come.To wrap up, I would reiterate that this book is invaluable for those starting out or those looking for a prompt on how to approach certain challenges. Although much of the content can inevitably be found online with a lot of digging around, the structure makes it a very handy reference guide and especially in print, it provides a welcome break from the screens we are all otherwise glued to, day in, day out.All F&O consultants need to learn Power Platform – for a long time it has not been the sole preserve of CE consultants and as Microsoft’s road map ticks on, it will gain more and more precedence.TL;DR? This is a well-structured book, with accurate and relevant content, presented clearly and concisely. Highly recommended for any D365 F&O user with an interest in customisation.
