Orchestrating the network function virtualization (NFV)

Converging to a network infrastructure based on SDN leverages elasticity of handling network resources. Commissioning and decommissioning network hardware appliances in a data center does not respond to the scaling question when facing an increased appetite of network resources. In addition, scaling down is not a common practice in a static data center environment space, as connectivity demand is not predictable.

This is where the NFV concept comes into the picture. The NFV approach is based on the conversion of the data center networking functionalities to the virtual world. Essentially, it decouples the network function of hardware through virtualization technology known as Virtual Network Function (VNF).

Any network device, such as a router, firewall, or a load balancer, can be turned into a VNF simply by running the software...
