A brief history of themes
Themes in many respects have been an essential part of the success of WordPress. From the first default theme through to the new concept of block themes and the latest default theme as of writing this book, themes have been at the heart and literal front of WordPress sites.
They are seen by and are familiar to many, even if they don’t work with WordPress. Take Kubrick for example, as shown in the following screenshot. This was the default theme for WordPress 1.5 to 2.9.

Lots of people would recognize the look of this theme even if they were unaware of its name or that it is from WordPress. Many of those who create WordPress themes also learned by examining the code of Kubrick and other similar themes due to themes being open source.
Now we’ve laid the foundation of what themes were, let’s look at what a theme is today and the types of themes available.
