Tracking methods
Tracking in Microsoft Project involves monitoring the progress of your project against the original plan. Before you start any tracking in your project, you’ll first want to set a baseline for the project, as described in Chapter 5, Defining a Baseline for Project Progress. Once the baseline is created, tracking your project will help you spot any delays or changes in the schedule, budget, or tasks. You will be able to quickly address any problems that may occur and in general ensure everything is on schedule.
There are several tracking methods you can use to help you monitor your project’s progress. We will discuss the following:
- Managing slipped tasks: Identify and attend to tasks that are behind schedule to minimize delays
- Recording actual and remaining dates: Update the actual start and finish dates of tasks to reflect real progress
