Detecting overallocation
At any point, each work resource can be classified into one of the following categories:
- Underallocated: The resource is assigned less work than their normal work capacity
- Fully allocated: The resource’s assignments match the resource’s maximum capacity
- Overallocated: The resource’s assignments exceed their maximum capacity
Understanding how your resources are being used at any moment is crucial for keeping your projects on track. Overallocated resources can cause delays and much stress on the project. In Microsoft Project, you can easily spot overallocations using tools such as the Resource Sheet, Resource Usage, and Team Planner views. These tools will show you how much work each resource has and when they are scheduled to do that work. You can also use the Overallocation Indicators, which quickly show any problems.
